Salary and tips: the truth

Elite Yachting

How Much Does One REALLY Earn in Yachting in 2026?

(Actual Pay Slip)

Forget everything you know about minimum wage or taxes. Yachting is a world apart.

When I first started, I couldn't believe my eyes. Today, I'm sharing the real numbers—the ones we only talk about among crew members.

Base Salary (Tax-Free)

Unlike a land-based job, your salary is 100% pocket money.

  • Junior / Beginner (Deckhand or Stewardess): Between *€2,500 and €3,000 / month*
  • Head Chef (My position): From *€4,000 to over €10,000 / month* on large yachts

Why "pocket money"? Because you have ZERO expenses.

  • Housing: Covered (air-conditioned cabin)
  • Food: Covered (fed by chefs like me)
  • Toiletries, insurance: Often covered

The Jackpot: The "Tips" (Gratuities)

This is where the magic happens. In charter yachting (rentals), guests leave a tip at the end of the week.

The unwritten rule? 10% to 20% of the charter price.

On a yacht renting for €300,000 per week, the total tip pool is €30,000 to €60,000.

Divided among 10 or 12 crew members… that's €2,000 to €5,000 in CASH BONUS per week.

Yes, you read that right. In one good summer season, you can save what others earn in three years.

The Reality:

The money flows easily—but the work is demanding. 16-hour days, no weekends during season. Yet when you return home in winter with a full bank account… it's worth every lost hour of sleep.

"Brutally honest and incredibly thorough CV audit. Showing how to translate heavy commercial engineering into yacht-ready language was pure gold. No fluff — just a crystal-clear roadmap."

"THE ROUTE gave me a much clearer understanding of the transition from merchant navy to yachting. Making the most of my existing CoC, rather than starting from scratch, was particularly valuable."

"Beyond my expectations. A real eye-opener — directing and educating me every step of the way. I'm so glad I showed interest."
